the city adjustment

These streets used to see so much,

now it’s all gone.

Oh, how things have changed.

We used to walk in the parks,

used to smile,

used to meet random strangers.

used to feel safe.

Now we’ve changed,

we are cautious,

we are protective,

we are afraid.

Makes me sound old,

and it’s only my 23rd round around the sun.
